Sustainability Platform

Our university, which has 'sustainability' as one of the core values in its strategy, adopts the mission of being a higher education institution that works to minimize the negative environmental, social and cultural impacts of its activities, leads the society in a sustainable way of life and has a scientific, social and economic impact at the global level. In 2018, we signed the United Nations Global Compact (Global Compact), a strategic policy initiative for institutions committed to implementing all their processes and strategies in line with 10 universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption. In parallel, the Sustainability Platform was established in 2018 in order to realize its purpose of existence and create a common ground for sharing.

Sustainability Platform carries out its activities under 3 main areas of expertise by developing partnerships with all other academic and administrative units. Researchers, external stakeholders, students and anyone who wants to realize projects in the field of sustainability constitute our stakeholder pool.

Environmental Sustainability:
Trainings and projects aiming to ensure the long-term health and resilience of ecosystems, biodiversity and natural resources with a focus on managing and protecting natural resources to meet the needs of future generations are carried out with both internal and external stakeholders.

Social Sustainability:
This specialization team focuses on improving the quality of life of individuals and communities, supporting well-being, promoting social justice and respect for human rights, with a particular focus on improving equality, diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging dynamics in organizations. The Gender Equality Office (ÖzU Gender Office) also reports to the relevant unit.

Community Engagement:
This specialization team works to develop community-based, inclusive, solidarity and innovative solutions for local, rural and community development. It focuses on bringing together local and academic knowledge and methods, developing local capacity and relevant areas of expertise, and strengthening social solidarity economies.

Sustainability Platform carries out the Activate the University for Climate Change (ATTUNE) Project within the scope of Erasmus+ KA220-HED Cooperation Partnerships in Higher Education with the participation of 9 partners from universities and NGOs from Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland and Turkey.

As a platform, we share our knowledge with the public through training, consultancy, academic research and integration into courses, and we seek solutions to global problems through fun and creative activities such as ideathons, datathons and greenhacks with stakeholders.
