Second Foreign Language Courses

Second Foreign Language Courses are listed among the “Elective Courses” that students are required to complete in order to graduate from the Undergraduate Hotel Management Program. Students must successfully complete at least 4 consecutive courses in one of the German, Chinese, Spanish and Russian languages (a total of 20 credits). Students who successfully complete the 4 consecutive courses in a language, may continue to take the subsequent courses in the same language or may choose a different foreign language course as an “Elective Course (Second Foreign Language)” to be counted towards their graduation requirements. The courses taken as such are also included in the grade point average calculation.

Registration for Second Foreign Language Courses

Student Services provides the School of Applied Sciences with the nationalities, admission types and high schools of all students enrolled in the Undergraduate Hotel Management Program, including both the students who start the English Preparatory Program and those who directly start their Undergraduate Hotel Management Program. The School of Applied Sciences Directorate then determines which second foreign language courses that the students may take based on the students’ nationalities, admission types and high schools.  Accordingly, Student Services supplies the information approved by the Director of the School of Applied Sciences into the Student Information System.

Students are required to personally complete their registrations via the Student Information System by choosing their second foreign language courses among the courses deemed appropriate for them by the School of Applied Sciences.

Students who register for the first time for a second foreign language course may, if they wish to do so, drop their current course and add another second foreign language course available for them, provided that it has sufficient quota, via the Student Information System by the end of the add-drop period.

Students who have taken the first of their second foreign language courses may change their existing second foreign language course preference with another among the courses deemed appropriate by the School of Applied Sciences provided that the grade they received in their current course satisfies the course repeat requirements specified in the rules and regulations for undergraduate programs.  The beginning level course of the new second foreign language chosen by the student is considered the repeat of the previous course. The dropped course is not included in the grade point average calculation.
