TITLE: "WHAT DO STUDENTS NEED TO DO TO ACHIEVE BETTER?"
(UNDERSTANDING SELF-REGULATED LEARNING AND AN OVERVIEW OF EFFECTIVE LEARNING STRATEGIES)
Achieving better at the university level requires students to be strategic, monitoring, adaptable, responsive, effortful, organized and relevant. This whole-person perspective is required to better understand and intervene with student engagement and achievement problems. The topic of self-regulated learning provides us an organized set of topics to cover while explaining these notions to our students such as goal setting (e.g., performance vs. mastery goals), motivation (e.g., self-efficacy beliefs, growth vs. fixed mindset), internal and external resource management (e.g., sleep, exercise, nutrition, time management, help-seeking, etc.), attention and memory, cognition and metacognition, in addition to some basic skills (note-taking, reading, writing, test-taking), and some required thinking skills (e.g., problem solving, analytical and critical thinking).
After providing this “big picture” perspective, this seminar will focus and elaborate more on “Effective Learning Strategies” for which the main resources will be: https://www.learningscientists.org/downloadable-materials
