Assistant Professor Erzen Öncel Joins The Guinier Project at Harvard Law School as Visiting Faculty Fellow
Assistant Professor Erzen Öncel from the Department of International Relations at Özyeğin University joins the Guinier Project at Harvard Law School as a Visiting Faculty Fellow for the Fall 2024 academic semester. Hosted by the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race & Justice at Harvard Law School and named after the late Prof. Lani Guinier, the Guinier Project is specifically designed to identify, cultivate, and promote promising early-career scholars with primary scholarly interests in racial representation, democracy, voting rights, and electoral reform.
The Guinier Project is particularly focused on the effect of moving from the current winner-take-all system to semi-proportional and proportional systems of representation and the potential effects of such a shift on racial representation. Assistant Prof. Öncel compares single-seat and multi-seat constituencies in mixed electoral systems to answer the question of how electoral systems affect the representation of minority groups.
