Pass the Pixel: A Collaborative Design Experiment

Our project consists of a workshop that aims to experiment with collaborative design processes, and discuss their possible consequences for the future of design practice. This workshop will be held within the 2^nd Istanbul Design Biennial. In this workshop, students and their supervisors from different locations (within and outside of Turkey) will meet online via Internet, and simultaneously work on a design project. The design project in terms of its content and operative flow will be defined collaboratively by the supervisors, and organized in a way that would enable equal contribution of each student by incorporating the principles of ‘conditional design’ –a design method informed by human-computing and crowdsourcing.
 
By integrating  plurality, progressive flow and happenstance within the design process, conditional design has the potential to activate a thought-provoking interstice for designers. In the hope of inspiring students for new inquiries, our project aims to utilize this approach for the first time with collaborators who are at physically different locations.
 
This workshop, which will be realized on the occasion of the II. İstanbul Design Biennial will be hosted by Özyeğin University for the İstanbul group. The duration will be three days including ‘research,’ ‘implementation,’ and ‘evaluation’ stages. The group size will be around 20 people, and it is open to all design students. Contributors will be required to have their own personal computer supplied with any image-processing software.
